A Big-data Analytics Platform on R Programming Language by Microsoft

Microsoft has recently developed an advanced-analytics platform on the open source R programming language. Microsoft, which acquired Revolution Analytics last year, took the next step by unwrapping an advanced-analytics program which is based on R programming language. The platform, Dubbed Microsoft R server is compatible for Windows, Hadoop, Linux, and Teradata Software and made available on the Microsoft Developer Network via DreamSpark educational program. R Server has been renamed by Microsoft in the Hadoop, Linux and Teradata versions. However, it has retained the phrase ‘RRE’ in the software of Windows version.

A prerequisite for R Server 2016 and RRE for Windows 2016

Microsoft calls the R Open as ‘enhanced distribution of R from Microsoft’ which is also said to be indispensable for both RRE for Windows 2016 and R server 2016. Last September, RRE had released its first Azure and after that, R support appeared suddenly as the preview of Microsoft SQL Server 2016. In a blogpost Microsoft stated that the R server is capable of supporting a range of big-data statistics, machine learning capabilities and predictive modeling which are all competent for R programming language. Moreover, Microsoft lets their users to run the scripts in top performance level. It allows users parallel architecture to explore and predict at scale. The reason for gaining massive popularity by R programming language is that it has vast areas of utility in Statistics and Analytics. Microsoft has inculcated its capabilities of advanced-analytics by attaining Revolution.

R can be used ‘behind the scenes’ by Microsoft’s Machine learning technology. It can use it for data preparation, machine learning and statistics. Mike Gualtieri, an Analyst with Forrester Research stated it as a good move from Microsoft and also expressed his view that Microsoft would not pull their all data-science ‘eggs‘ in one R ‘basket‘. He mentioned that although R is widespread among data-scientists, but computer scientists might find that it is not so elegant or performant programming language for any purposes. He further added that R is seemed to be like Cobol for the sophisticated developers and Python and other up-to-date programming languages are gradually getting more favor from users.
